I'm a big fan of both of these players, I sincerely hope the Sharks kick ass this year because of it.
Just not against us. |

It's nice to hear something positive about these two for a change. Great article Tim. |

Not by me. Well, not Jumbo anyway. One of my all time favorite players. When I used to fantasy draft in NHL05 or whatever, my top line was always Ryan Smyth, Joe Thornton and Jerome Iginla. |

It will def be nice for both of these guys to get these milestones.
My question to you and your fans is this. I know it goes around a bit. But I dont normally fallow in Sharks threads. Do you think its a mistake to of not traded both Marleau and Jumbo Joe for future talent to solidify the core around Pav's and Couture? The return this past off season could of been huge I presume. The more time that goes on the less theyre going to be worth. Marleau for me as an outsider would be the one guy Id rather keep and let retire a Shark. |

The return on those two would definitely bring a good return, but it would destroy the Sharks offense. I don't think any team could recover by trading two 70+ point players and still be a contender. After a 111 point season the focus should stay with "what do we need to add, or do differently?" Too many people have smashed the panic button to pieces after the loss to the Kings, they're still a top team in the Western Conference. Being the running joke of the playoffs doesn't change how talented this team is, and will be, until their new contracts are over. |

I guess I dont look to much into how well the Sharks draft. They have a solid pool of kids and keep having random late pick defensemen make solid climbs through the ranks. The prospect pool in SJ is stronger than I thought. That helps with holding onto Jumbo and Patty. |

Devils haven't made the play offs since losing parise and kovalchuk but both those guys went out the door with absolutely no return |

If Joe Thornton retired today, he'd probably still get in the Hall of Fame. Cup or not.
As much as I want it to happen, I think without a Cup there is no way Marleau gets into the hall. Even if he continues to put up decent numbers, it's a hard sell. The only way I see it happening is if he hits 500 goals and wins a Cup. |

I think he has a decent shot to make it in with or without a Cup by the time he's done. When he retires he will be over 500 goals and 1100 points. Standards are changing for the Hall. It won't be as fast as Joe gets in, but I think he'll eventually be in there, although a Cup would definitely help his cause and it's obviously something I'd like to see as well. |

Depending on the definition of huge I guess but I don't think guys at that stage of their career bring back as much as they are worth. Look at past deals of similar star players.
Iginla got a late 1st rounder and two lower end prospects.
Kesler got a late 1st round pick, a 3C with a bit of upside, a 3rd (Dorsett) and a reclamation project.
Marty got a late first a 2nd and a top 6 UFA.
Spezza got a decent young forward a couple of lower end prospects and a 2nd.
Other than St. Louis I don't think any team got good value back for the player and I think it would be the same for Thornton and Marleau. Only young stars get the huge returns a la Seguin and that one is debatable.

First off, I'm a huge fan of Jumbo. Always have been, always will be.
If I'm the Sharks though, I entertain the thought of getting a young star for Joe after this year especially if they don't win the cup. He'll have 2 years left on his contract which will be a big selling point. They're going to lose him in 2-3 years for nothing and then you've still lost your 70-80pt player. Calgary waited too long, and when he was finally dropping off, to get rid of Iginla. |

The Sharks already tried doing that this summer. Thornton basically came out to the public and said he wasn't going to be waiving his NTC to go anywhere. |

I agree on the Iginla thing.
I think the Sharks may ask at the end this time if they have another horrible playoffs. One or both could be seen going.
Joe I think would get a 1st and a decent prospect. |
